Drypoint Introduction

Drypoint is an intaglio printing technique in which lines and structures are worked into a printing plate. The plate is then coated with printing ink and wiped away so that ink remains in the recesses. The plate is then covered with paper, run through the printing press, and the ink is transferred to the paper: the print is created.

In the course, you'll learn the basics of intaglio printing using drypoint on acrylic – a contemporary variation of this technique. You develop your motif, work it into the printing plate, and go through the entire printing process step by step until you have a finished print from the press. At the end of the course, you take your prints home with you. You don't need any previous experience. Just bring interest and curiosity about how lines, grooves, and ink leave traces on paper.

What to bring:

• Printing paper (can be purchased on site)

For printing, it’s best if the paper is 100% cotton, acid-free, and fine-textured, with a weight of 150–300 gsm depending on the technique.Lighter paper is generally better suited for hand-printing techniques, while heavier paper works better for machine printing.
